Sometimes you just need to DO something
Yesterday, the Senate finally managed to break a Republican filibuster. Amazing. And what issue brought enough Republicans across the aisle to actually participate in a bi-partisan issue?
Gun Control.
Now, don't get too excited. They didn't actually pass a law strengthening gun control regulations - no, they simply got enough votes to...you know...discuss it and yeah, vote on it (some time next week). But let's face it, for the Senate, that's saying something - and it was enough to make me want to do more than just write Senators and Representatives. Below (and no, it's not under the cut) is a table of icons, each representing one of the beautiful and innocent children cut down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Yes, I know, it's just the 20 children and not the brave and courageous men and women who died that day as well, but that's only because I know how quick we'll act on behalf of our children - faster than almost anything else - and I want Congress to get one thing right this time and now, while so many are working so hard to keep these children front and center, to make our politicians put aside politics and greed and DO. THE. RIGHT. THING. Americans have a notoriously short term memory. sometimes I think those incredible "First Responders" - the men and women who first stepped into those classrooms and saw the carnage should be allowed to post the photos. Yes, I know that sounds horrible of me, heartless, even, but right now, it's like...maybe that's the only thing that will get us off our fat asses and CHANGE how we think about guns; change our reaction to those who would use stupid buzz words, the waving of the American flag in our faces, all the while yelling ridiculous phrases like, "They're coming to take YOUR guns away!" But these twenty children deserve to be seen and remembered as they were; before that horrific day, so for me, I turned to Photoshop. What a great thing it would be if, until real changes our made to our gun control laws, we gave up icons of our fandoms and other interests and used icons of these children; maybe if LJ and DW and FB and Twitter and other social medias reminded daily by use of photos of these children even as we go about discussing other topics, well, maybe it would be an awesome thing.

So these icons are yours to take and use. To make a statement until Change comes. I'll be putting up some banners soon too, but for now, maybe if every post used one of these dear babes as the icon, if one of them represented you on your twitter or FB or whatever social media/s you use - the message will be heard in another new way? My Twitter now has Dylan as my profile photo and Allison is now my FB photo.
