opportunity of a lifetime - plus a huge thank you!
i'm on the computer for just a few minutes before taking a pill and heading back to bed, but i'm here because at 8:00pm (pst) on turner classic movie station, i get the chance to see my father. Yep, you read that right. at 8pm, they're playing 'stage door canteen', a flick that was made to help raise money for the USO canteens in the US and abroad. they did this one, which is about the canteen in new york and they did one called the 'hollywood canteen'. even though stage door canteen is about the ny one, it was filmed mostly in los angeles, at fort macarthur and san pedro. my dad was a teenager and he, like several other boys who were standing around watching the filming, were given the opportunity to be extras (soldiers). dad, who had three brothers in the service, jumped at the chance. and, because of his height (6'5) towers over his fellow 'extras' and 'marines', making it easy for me to spot him. :) more under the cut....

if you want to try to spot him while watching the movie, take note: when edgar bergen (yes, candice's father) comes on with his 'dummy', start paying attention because when he's done, he introduces singer, gracie fields, and that's when my dad can be seen when they cut to the audience, which they do several times. first, she sings the, 'machine gun songand you can spot him once, but when she sings, 'the lord's prayerand all the boys stand, he's really obvious (he's near the front and just behind a girl and a very good looking guy to our right), thanks to his height. :) he's a marine in dress blues and they show him like, three times during her singing with one fairly long moment and another fairly long moment as she finishes the lord's prayer and they all bow their heads before looking up again. you can also see the movie on youtube, but i've added a couple of screencaps of dad to help you if you do watch (just captured off the youtube *g*)

being a part of the movie is why my dad talked his mother into writing the letter okaying him going into the service (navy) even though he was underage (it was filmed in '43 and he was barely 17). anyway, i can't wait to see a moment in time that captures my dad having fun with his buddies as extras on a movie.

now for my huge thank you....

i received a surprise in the mail the other day - a sony e-reader!!!!! it came from two friends who knew how hard it's been not being able to be on the computer, not being able to read stories from the computer, and together, they got me this wonderful, extraordinary gift! it's light, thin and i can easily use it in bed! yee yaw!!!!

so, to these two wonderful women, who shall remain anonymous (marilyn and janet *g*) i say....
and

oh, and also....

*blows nose again*

Two wonderful gifts in the same day. (((( hugs )))) What a wonderful image to have of your father, smiling, and young, captured forever on celluloid that will be preserved by Hollywood.

And two wonderful, amazing friends giving you the means to keep your mind occupied. A chance to read lots of stargate fic & sentinel fic and any fic, perhaps rekindle your muse for the day you can sit at your computer again. curl up with abby and enjoy. Your two friends are a blessing.

(lots of stuff getting loaded to AO3, and for some great atlantis fic i recommend keira marcos 'the lantean legacy' which is conveniently translated to several ebook formats -- http://keiramarcos.com/ebooks/ )

Thank you for posting, I've been worried for how your doing. Take care of yourself! ((hugs again))

Hey, thanks for sharing these screen caps! You're right, he was a very good looking young man, but he also looks older than his years. Maybe it's the uniform?

The gift is grand, and I hope it helps pass the time. I think of you lots and hope that your pill works immediately. ::HUGS::

What an incredible moment of your father's life to have captured on celluloid! He's very handsome and was probably very disarming too. I'm so glad you were awake to see it.
I hope things go well for you Aly, I think of you often and have added you to my prayer list (I'm not sure how you feel about this, but I wanted to send out healing thoughts somehow)and you'll surly enjoy your new e-reader.
All my best to you Aly,
Theresa

Oh, I'm so glad to see you post! I've missed reading your posts! I think about you everyday, and hope you start feeling better soon. I'm a crappy friend that should write you, but seem to not find the time to do more than read my journal.

Enjoy the ereader - they're great!
