A Tribute to Friends
The internet is a marvelous thing. It may have it's downside, but what it's given me in the last thirteen years is more precious than gold; namely FRIENDS. True, blue girlfriends, the kind you read about in novels only better because some of them you've yet to meet in person. Recent events brought home to me just how special - and vital - good friends can be. Friends who'll clean up for you, see you at your worst, call you from across the country, bring you vital items and, no matter how far away they are, you know they're with you.

I bless the day my curiosity about The Sentinel brought me into the cyber world and fandoms because otherwise, well, I'd have missed out on meeting some very special people and counting them among the dearest people in my life. So for you guys - and you know who you are:

It was Stargate SG-1, year 2001, and getting my first cable modem instead of dial-up that truly brought me into the fold. I had dabbled, hung out on a class Trek dejanews group, briefly found a warm, happy place on the prodigy Beauty & the Beast board. (i still wonder what happened to that group, it was all poetry, & magic & lovely). But it was Stargate, specifically my love of Daniel, that brought me everything since. I can barely express how grateful I am for the friends, friendship--family--I found in the wake of that decision. I've met only a few irl, and am doubly blessed by that, as in them I have found friends who are true.

Not just the internet.

I got involved in fandom (Star Trek) in 1975. Met my two closest friends back then. Until then... I had acquaintances I called 'friend', but I never felt I had much in common with them at all, even when we shared the same interests.

It's fandom that's the catalyst. The internet just makes it easier (faster) to keep in touch, and lets you 'meet' more people who live at a distance, people who are... I think 'sympatico' (sp?) is the word I'm after.

Most of my internet friends I know I'll never meet in person; but I value them in a way I don't think I valued any of the 'friends' I had pre-fandom.

No, thank YOU!

Internet has been a gigantic gift. I've "met" many wonderful people. The people I've gotten to meet in person as a result of fandom have been special treats!
